Karim Rashid in Shanghai

On 12 March, BoConcept in Shanghai celebrated the release of a new collection by Karim Rashid.  Karim is a celebrated designer with collections, work, and art installations around the world.

BoConcept’s store in Shanghai is centered in the stylish Xintiandi neighborhood, and Shanghai residents can view the collection there.  Karim’s new Ottowa collection is a study in comfort, design and functionality.  Karim talked about the importance of furniture’s comfort and functionality, and how the collection was inspired by the city he first studied design in,Ottowa.

The event at BoConcept’s Shanghai store kicked off with Karim’s speech, and then he was presented a gift of “four treasures” – a calligraphy set.  He was put to a test to paint something with a calligraphy brush and came up with a self portrait.

The overall vibe of the collection is minimalist, yet modern and functional.  The table’s legs and shape are designed to accommodate tall people (Karim is quite tall – he overshadowed his Chinese translator!) with comfort.  The chairs are inspired by leaves and have cross-table profiles; perfect for tucking in your legs.  The collection also comes with a custom-designed set of espresso cups, saucers, and mugs.  Bright orange lamps serve as pops of color.

Minimalist interior design

Lexington Avenue office design by Ana Hernandez Palacios  of Masque Spacio design studio, displays a minimalist and sophisticated interior. Working on this design she was inspired by urban style of New York. Yellow stripes represent taxi cabs and black stripes stand for the skyscrapers.

First of all, the office needed to be divided in two spaces and to be transparent in order to get enough natural light. We chose an industrial curtain combined with a sticker from the identity logo to give the office a first touch of identity and urban style. In the first room you can see the incorporation of the black and yellow lines from the logo giving it an extra corporative touch. We opted for furniture from Uno Design by Javier Mariscal and the ecofriendly Eiffel, a recycled paper stool from the pretty new RS Barcelona. This combined with white office furniture and a white floor to create the urban and sophisticated touch. The corner lamp was created to give an extra industrial touch.” Press release by Ana.

Michael Samoriz, designer of Ukraine-based Umbra Design Studio came up with this chair that constructs a new idea when it comes to seating unit design. Created as an elegant silhouette of the well-known seating unit, the Outline Chair displays a fantastic shape that compliments a modern home. In his search for this particular design, Michael Samoriz used simple, clean lines to create the “elegant chair, side path which looks like a closed line.” The chair can have a mix of different colours – this creates the opportunity of matching it with your personalized interior design. Whether you like the cut-out version or the one that showcases a duo of materials, the Outline Chair displays a distinctive design that differentiates itself from similar products. This chair can surely find a place in your home as long as you are willing to explore modern chair design and proudly display interesting and creative seating elements like this one in a corner of your home.
